This 1,568-acre refuge is nestled in the picturesque Swan Valley between the Swan Range to the east and the Mission Range to the west. The place names of Swan Lake and Swan River have two possible origins. One story says the features are named after Emmett Swan, an early resident of the valley. Another plausible explanation is the report, by E.S. Camecon, of nesting Trumpeter Swans on Swan Lake in 1881. Tundra Swans have traditionally migrated through this area during spring and fall migration. Whatever the explanation, Swan River, Swan Lake, Swan Valley, and the Swan Mountains are beautiful nonetheless. This eTrail provides detailed information on birding strategies for this specific location, the specialty birds and other key birds you might see, directions to each birding spot, and helpful general information.
