This area contains the two major cities of Faribault and Northfield, and offers plenty of birding opportunities in the “big woods,” the deciduous woodlands along the Cannon River and around area lakes. It’s difficult to pick a starting point here, but the best-known birding site definitely is Nerstrand Woods State Park
Key birds: Red-shouldered Hawk, American Woodcock, Willow Flycatcher, Black- and Yellow-billed Cuckoos, Orchard Oriole, Dickcissel, Grasshopper Sparrow. Don’t miss: Nerstrand Woods State Park.
