Based just two miles from Canaan Valley Ski Resort, Timberline surfaced about 20 years ago on old logging industry grounds with little more than a T-bar surface lift and limited snowmaking. At that time, most skiers had just half of the mountain’s available terrain. The more challenging upper mountain relied solely on natural snowfall, accessible only by a slow trek on the resort’s Piston Bully snow grooming machine. Some of the advanced trails close in the absence of snowmaking, while the two-mile Salamander trail has been known to stay open when it’s barely skiable. Nonetheless, the resort will typically manage over 120 days of skiing per year and is working harder to make more snow.
