The first representative legislative assembly in North America met in Jamestown 12 years after the town was founded. Jamestown remained the colonial capital until 1698, when a fire burned the statehouse. The capital was moved to Williamsburg that year. Eventually, the Jamestown settlement dwindled, and the area was used as farmland. Special attractions: Historic church and town site, visitor center, interpretive signs on walking path, James River views.

The trail guide is out of date. The site is significantly improved since the guide was written. See the National Park Website for more information. There are also nice new 3 mile and 5 mile biking loops with interpretive signs now available.
