In addition to the first Christmas celebration, Hampton claims many other firsts: It is the oldest English-speaking U.S. settlement still in existence, the first town in the United States to offer free public education, the first city to provide organized education to African-Americans, and the first training ground for U.S. astronauts. This walk will introduce you to the downtown Hampton waterfront and the surrounding neighborhood with its colorful marinas, historic brick buildings, Victorian houses, and pedestrian-friendly streets. Special attractions: Aerospace museum, antique carousel, marinas, historic sites, boutiques, numerous restaurants.
