Calvary Cemetery is a tad younger than Bellefontaine, its neighbor to the south; at almost 480 acres, it is also larger. Although established in 1857, it contains the graves of people who died much earlier but were buried first in Catholic cemeteries that were closed when the growing city needed more room downtown. Like Bellefontaine, Calvary is the final resting place for many well-known citizens of St. Louis. The two cemeteries share not only a common street boundary, Calvary Avenue, but also an attractive parklike setting, curving roadways, intricate memorial art, towering monuments, and architecturally noteworthy mausoleums. Special attractions: Ornate monuments and mausoleums, park setting and lush landscaping, historic gravesites of some of the city’s most notable residents.
