When you see the green, white, and red fireplugs, you will know you have entered the Hill. The area was first settled by northern Italians in the early 1900s; they had left the Illinois coal fields to mine clay for St. Louis’s booming terra cotta and fire-brick businesses. For almost a century, the Hill has maintained its ethnic flavor, and even today an estimated 75 percent of its residents are of Italian descent. Special attractions: Fantastic Italian food, fun Italian grocery stores, a well-tended and charming neighborhood.
