In the past two decades, numerous awards from the American Zoo and Aquarium Association have established Woodland Park as one of the most progressive and humane zoos in the United States. Special attractions: Zoo, food concessions, bookstore, and gift shop. The origins of the Seattle zoo extend back to the beginning of the 20th century. The city purchased the 200-acre estate of Guy Carlton Phinney from his widow for $500 cash and assumption of the mortgage. The Woodland Park Zoo opened in April 1904 with a couple of bears, a few birds, and some deer and elk. Development proceeded at the pace of a three-toed sloth. The original bear pits and cages were not replaced until 1965, when a Woodland Park Zoological Society was created to organize planning and fundraising.
