The trail begins off US 50, just south of the Sand Springs Pony Express Station historical marker and the Sand Mountain Recreation Area, 26 miles east of Fallon. The wide, maintained, sandy and rocky road begins by traveling south across an alkali flat. Vegetation on the surrounding treeless terrain is typical of the Nevada high desert: sagebrush, rabbit brush, as well as some creosote brush. Approaching the hills of the Cocoon Mountains to the southwest and the Sand Springs Range to the east, the trail proceeds south. Special Attractions: Road through historic Rawhide Mining District. Long, easygoing trail across a variety of terrain. Network of 4WD roads off the main trail to explore. Adjacent to the sand dunes of the Sand Mountain Recreation Area for OHVs.
