Walk in George Washington’s footsteps and follow the upper Rahway River in Essex County’s largest park. Today, the Hobart Gap between Summit and the part of Millburn Township that Stewart Hartshorn developed into Short Hills in the twentieth century carries the busy Route 24 freeway along the Essex–Union county line.
But in the late years of the American Revolution, this break in the Watchung Mountain ridges was a strategic hot spot patrolled by nervous local militiamen.
