Otis Reservoir, one of the largest water bodies in western Massachusetts, is the focal point for numerous anglers, hunters, campers, and off-road vehicle enthusiasts. The seldom-used trail system maintains its wilderness feel. After paying the day-use fee at the contact station, walk south to the far end of the parking lot. Pass the signed Gilmore Trail entrance (this will be your return point as this trail description follows the trail in reverse) to reach the outbound trailhead just 25 feet beyond; turn left onto the trail. Follow the chipped path a short distance and turn right at the first junction, where signs identify Long Loop (your route) and Short Loop (straight). The trail is marked by blue blazes.
