Guilder Pond is locally renowned for its profuse mountain laurel bloom, while ancient pitch-pine-topped Mount Everett, the highest point in southern Berkshire County, offers sublime vistas. From the metal gate at the bottom of the gravel access road, where a donation pipe is located, stroll steadily uphill on the roadway through a mixed forest of oak, maple, birch, beech, white pine, and hemlock. Mountain laurel is in evidence almost immediately, especially from late June to early July when it flowers. Some bushes are over 12 feet tall. The roadway winds under a canopy of shading eastern hemlocks, as does Guilder Brook on the left a bit farther.
