From a busy highway, the route follows the Appalachian Trail over a couple of wooded promontories to a serene pond ringed by mountain laurel in Massachusetts’ most expansive state forest. This is the same parking area and trailhead as the Upper Goose Pond hike (Trip 33). From the kiosk, complete with display maps of the AT route, walk east, past the kiosk to the pedestrian crossing sign on the left. Do not walk along US 20 as this is very hazardous—no shoulder in spots. Use caution crossing the highway. A narrow blue-blazed access trail leads into a forest of American beech, eastern hemlock, and white pine. Tiny and fuzzy, the paired white blossoms of partridgeberry bloom in ground-hugging mats here in early summer. The path parallels US 20 for about 100 yards.
