A largely out-and-back hike on a portion of fabled Mahican Mohawk Trail that follows the spine of the Hoosac Range to a stunning vista atop Spruce Hill. This is a longer but less traveled option to Spruce Hill than via Busby Trail. The route begins at an elevation of more than 2,000 feet at a wooden kiosk complete with a large trail map. Walk up into the fern-rich forest of northern hard-woods—American beech, red maple, birch, and oak. The path is demarcated by red on white blazes on trees. Hobblebush (viburnum) is abundant in the understory along the mostly level trail. There are a few damp spots along the path, and oaks soon become dominant. It’s an interesting mix of forest types; northern hardwoods versus oaks with southern affinities.
