A difficult, rewarding traverse of the “hardest mile on the Appalachian Trail.” Of all the notches in New England, perhaps none is more alluring or intimidating than Mahoosuc Notch. Often referred to by thru-hikers as the hardest mile of the entire 2,175-mile Appalachian Trail (AT), this difficult passage through jumbled granite slabs and shadowy caverns has been known to frustrate more than a few ill-prepared or unsuspecting hikers. To make your way here, you’ll have to crouch, crawl, jump, and climb over slippery terrain that is often snowbound well into June. Yet, despite its fierce reputation, the notch is also a wildly beautiful place that never ceases to surprise. Walk the trail in late spring and delicate pink lady slippers will show the way. Come on a hot summer’s day, and you’ll delight in the cool, refreshing air that issues from the snow and ice clinging to life deep within the Notches’ maw.
