An inland paddle on a picturesque river steeped in New England history. This scenic river is a pleasure to paddle and a fine excursion from summer crowds along the coast. The York’s swift current will carry you past several notable historic sites, beautiful shoreline houses, parks and preserves before branching off into marshland above the Scotland Bridge. Depending on the tide, put in on either side of the Wiggly Bridge. This picturesque structure spans the inlet to Barrells Mill Pond and is purportedly the world’s smallest pedestrian suspension bridge. The bridge leads to Steedman Woods, a 16-acre sanctuary left “forever wild” by the C. Roland Steedman family and now under the care of the Old York Historical Museum. The mile-long walk through the preserve is well worth the trip.
