A leisurely walk through a beautiful and unique peatland environment. Saco Heath is one of Maine’s most unique and fascinating natural ecosystems. The 1,300-acre preserve, bounded by suburban development and within earshot of interstate traffic, has the feel of an exotic, tranquil island. It is the southern-most example of a “coalesced domed bog” in North America, and the only known location in the world where Atlantic white cedar grows on this type of peatland. The preserve also harbors a wide range of flora and fauna including the state’s only population of Hessel’s hairstreak butterfly.
