In an effort to protect Cape Cod’s native American holly trees, horticulturist Wilfrid Wheeler began this plantation in 1925. When Massachusetts Audubon acquired the property in 1965, there were more than 1,000 holly trees on the property, many of them planted by Wheeler. The trees included at least sixty-five varieties transplanted from all over the northeastern United States. Besides the hollies there were other unusual trees such as a stand of shrublike Franklinia trees which flower in the fall. This is a small reservation, but the presence of so many holly trees makes it worth the trip. The property is comprised of mixed woodlands and fields that surround a small pond. Highlights: Pond, fields, good birding.
