The towering hemlocks and pines anchored on the steep hillside slopes of Rocky Narrows are more reminiscent of northern New England than eastern Massachusetts. This rugged terrain, coupled with the fact that the reservation can be reached only by canoe, gives the hiker the feeling he or she is in a region much more remote than Sherborn, just a half-hour drive from downtown Boston. Rocky Narrows is one of the few places on the Charles where steep granite ledges come down to the water’s edge. Highlights: Canoeing the Charles, hemlock forest, ridge top.
