The Stavros Reservation, a small preserve in Essex Township, includes one of the best lookout points in the area. The glacial drumlin called White’s Hill rises only 116 feet above the Essex salt marshes, yet the views are absolutely spectacular. From the summit you can see Crane’s Beach, Castle Hill, Hog Island, and Castle Neck River. Although the property is small, nearby Island Road offers additional exploration. Wayne Mitton, regional supervisor for the Trustees of Reservations, notes that “Island Road is one of the best roads for birding on the North Shore.” He’s right; the marsh pools and fields attract all sorts of birds, so be sure to bring your binoculars. Highlights: Spectacular views, salt marsh, great birding.
