Owned by the Trustees of Reservations, Old Town Hill offers the nature lover a chance to walk to the top of a wooded glacial drumlin and explore the edge of a broad salt marsh. It’s a very quiet area with a good combination of coastal birds, inland birds, and wild mammals. Here’s a hike where the road leading to the reservation is worth the trip in itself. Newman Road is a New England country lane in the truest sense; farms, fields, woodlands, pastures, and giant maples line the east end of the road, making it a perfect place to go for a stroll. Farther down Newman Road to the west, you will pass through a beautiful marshy area that drains into the Parker River; it’s a good place to bring the binoculars and do some birding. Highlights: Hilltop view, salt marsh, good birding.

Picking your time to do this hike is key as the trail runs through salt marshes and the Greenhead Flies can end your hike extremely quick with their painfull bite. Try to avoid mid July - mid August. Good views out to the ocean from the atop of the hill which make for a great place to have lunch. I wish there was more trail but a good hike for family.

Knowing where to park was the only confusing part of this trail. The old parking area closer to Route 1A is still used but not recommended (No lot). The other lot to the west is ample. The trail to Old Town Hill starts across the road from the preferred parking area just to the west. Easy grades with extensive views of the surrounding towns and Atlantic Ocean. Descent to the old parking area is quite steep but relatively short. The trail to the edge of the marsh river is great for kids and pets. Watch out for the muddy areas.
