The great little harbor town of Carolina Beach has a small wharf, fishing charters, and some of the best beachfront camping you can find in the state. Simply buy your permit, hop in your four-wheel-drive vehicle (required), and go. When I say beachfront, I mean beachfront. You drive on the hard-packed sands of the beach, find a spot to set up your tent (first come, first served), and literally go to sleep to the sound of the waves falling on the shore. Remember that the tides will change, so be sure to pitch your tent and park your car above the high-water mark.
