The park seems untouched, primal. There are hiking trails and a fishing pier, and the four primitive campsites are just that, primitive. The sites are hike-in only and require anywhere from a 0.25- to 0.5-mile hike to reach them. While they are designated as group campsites, individual families are welcome to camp here as well. Lake Waccamaw is a classic example of what is known as a Carolina bay. A bay is an elliptical-or oval-shaped natural depression that for some unexplained reason is situated in a northwest to southeast orientation. Hundreds of these bays can be found within the state’s coastal region.
