As you settle into your camp chair following a busy workweek or after a long day of hiking, the sounds of the crickets and frogs begin to lull you. Your tension eases as the glow of the flame flickers, mesmerizes. Then you hear in the distance the rustle of a raccoon or a series of hoots from the great horned owl. This is why you are here; this is what you came for. Welcome to Lumber River: Chalk Banks. That’s the experience you are in for at this remote corner of the state park, near the headwaters of the Lumber River. The park has a canoe/kayak launch, mountain bike and hiking trails, and a large picnic area along the banks of the river. There is 1 wheelchair-accessible site.
