With easy access to both Raleigh and Durham, William B. Umstead Park is a diamond in the rough. This surprisingly nice patch of forest encompasses more than 5,500 acres and is made up of wooded rolling hills. You can stroll through the forest on one of the many hiking trails or hop on your horse or mountain bike and hit the trail a bit harder. There are three man-made lakes for fishing. Or if you prefer, you can rent a canoe or bring your own and enjoy a nice easy paddle. Several creeks wind through the park, and swimming is allowed at Sycamore Lake, but only for registered group campers.
