As remote as the Mortimer Campground seems, it fills up quickly on the weekends, primarily with locals. And just like night and day, if you camp here during the week, you are likely to have the place to yourself. There is a day-use picnic area just outside the campground entrance, and a quaint creek runs right through the property. The area is surrounded by trails of every kind. Hike, mountain bike, horseback ride, or hop on your all-terrain vehicle (ATV). They are all welcome in this portion of the Pisgah National Forest. If you prefer to simply sightsee, head up to the Blue Ridge Parkway for a scenic drive, or head over to NC 181 and stop at the Brown Mountain Overlook near dusk.
