This campground offers some of the best—and some of the worst—camping I’ve seen. Some of the sites are well spaced and wooded and sit right alongside the Nantahala River; others are out in an open field, right on top of one another, with no privacy whatsoever. Also, the campground is pretty big, and not very well marked, so be sure to grab a site map when you come in. Now for the good news. Trails galore, both hiking and equestrian, run throughout the area as well as the campground. Even the Appalachian Trail can be easily accessed from the Standing Indian Campground. Don your hiking boots or saddle your horse, and go see the forest.
