This short hike leads to the rocky summit of Cox’s Head, with fine views of the mouth of the Kennebec River and Port Popham. Along the hike you pass huge old trees, climb a rocky ridge, and pass a small spring-fed pond. Cox Head juts out into the Kennebec River near its mouth. The river’s channel is narrowed considerably between Cox Head and Long Island. As a result, the river is nearly 100 feet deep. From the overlook atop Cox Head, you can watch the dark Kennebec rush past toward the Gulf of Maine. Across Atkins Bay is Popham Beach and the fort of the same name.
