The Giant’s Stairs are a break in the rocky coast of Bailey Island where a natural staircase of basalt leads from the trail down into the crashing surf. This easy walk passes other formations such as Pinnacle Rock. A short clamber over the rocks from the end of the graded trail leads to The Gully, a narrow inlet off Little Harbor. The drive to the Giant’s Stairs down ME 24 crosses an increasingly narrow chain of islands. Orr’s and Bailey Islands are less than a mile wide. The bridge that connects the two islands is a unique cribwork bridge. Long granite blocks were laid on a natural reef in an open cribwork pattern to allow the strong and substantial tides to flow through the bridge. The rush of the tide through Will’s Gut would have destroyed a conventional bridge.
