One of Oakland County’s best fall hikes, Ortonville Recreation Area offers two official loops for hikers or, more accurately, one large loop with a shortcut in the middle. Take the longer loop for an extended hike through rolling forested hills—great in spring and summer, but even better with autumn color. Crisp autumn days, burnt orange and red in the trees, and blankets of leaves on the ground. Autumn is one of the best times to enjoy a hike at the Ortonville State Recreation Area. And you won’t be the only one. On weekend mornings couples walk by with their dogs, looking not unlike a page from an L.L.Bean catalog. Spring and summer are also acceptable times to hike Ortonville Rec—the ground isn’t particularly wet (except in one spot), and the trails don’t become overgrown as summer wears on—but there’s something special about hiking here in the fall.
