The Hickory Hills Trail at Waterloo State Recreation Area is a long walk to a steep loop. Along the way you pass wetlands and lakes, climbing into a dense hickory and oak forest. Several side trips can be added to include views of Mill Lake or the bog near the park’s Discovery Center.
The park has 47 miles of hiking trails, 12 miles of interpretive nature trails, four campgrounds (two modern, one rustic, and one equestrian), eleven lakes for fishing, rustic cabins to rent, numerous boat launches, and a swimming beach. The Waterloo–Pinckney Trail, which threads its way 31.0 miles through both recreation areas, is southeast Michigan’s only backpacking trail, offering campers an actual multi-night backpacking experience close to Metro Detroit.
