Have you ever taken a long drive up a hot and dusty road and feared what you’d find at the end? Isn’t it great when the drive pays off and you find a spectacular new place that you never even dreamed could exist? While it’s a shame to take the suspense out of your drive to Oak Grove, I have to share that this hidden little campground is an unexpected happy ending to what first appeared an unpromising journey. The road to Oak Grove will give you a firsthand lesson about the effects of elevation on plant life. After leaving Leeds and the tiny town of Silver Reef, the landscape is tan and drab, with only a few freckles of dark green juniper and scrubby sage. As the dusty dirt road winds farther up Leeds Creek, however, wildflowers appear—sporadically at first, then in profusion—and the journey begins to show promise.
