In the mid-1800s, a long-distance relationship would have been nearly impossible. It took six months to get a message from one end of the country to the other. That’s an entire year from the time you asked, “Do you still love me?” and your sweetie replied, “Wait, who are you again?” Three enterprising men set out to change that: W. H. Russell, Alexander Majors, and William B. Waddell. Their plan: set up a series of sprinting horses that could carry messages from coast to coast in just 10 days. On January 27, 1860, they announced the formation of the Pony Express. Simpson Springs, in Utah’s West Desert, was an important watering station and rest house for riders along the route. Although the Pony Express operated for less than two years, its heritage has been preserved at Simpson Springs.
