Yellow pine is the common name for ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa). Look around at Yellowpine Campground, and you’ll find plenty of living specimens of this fantastic forest resident. Ponderosa pines, lodgepole pines, and aspens fill the campground. When a lofty alpine breeze makes its way up the canyon, it rustles the trees’ high crowns to create a whispery and enchanting song. Tucked just below Upper Stillwater Reservoir in the midst of all these trees, Yellowpine Campground has one attribute that so few other campgrounds can boast: accessibility. I’m not just talking about the paved road that takes you there (although that sinuous stretch of road that rambles along Rock Creek is undoubtedly accessible to any driver); I’m talking about the accessibility of the campground facilities to campers with disabilities.
