High Creek also feeds the canyon with plenty of irrigation, so its shores are well shaded even in the lowest reaches. Segments of the creek are lined with cliffs, others with brush. Fishing isn’t easy here, but for the persistent, the payoff can be surprisingly worthwhile. High Creek flows right past the campground in some of its most accessible sections, so take advantage of the cool water. Even if used only for a few moments of contemplation, rivers are special things, and a campground with a river so close shouldn’t be taken for granted. Both sites enjoy the shade of the canyon walls and trees along the river. The small vault toilet is tidy and well kept. The campground is just about the only sign of civilization in the entire canyon. The road past the campground continues to a point where a four-wheel drive is probably recommended. After you can drive no more, a steep trail continues up the mountain into the Mount Naomi Wilderness Area and eventually leads you right past High Creek Lake on the Naomi Peak Trail, delivering you down to Tony Grove Lake (see Tony Grove Campground, page 85).
