This wonderful garden beneath the cliffs of the Na Pali Coast is one of five national tropical botanical gardens in Hawai’i, chartered by Congress in 1976 to promote research and education and to preserve ecosystems and cultural knowledge. It’s a good place to learn about some of the things you’ll see along Kauai’s trails and roadsides—not just their names, but their uses and the Hawaiian myths and legends associated with them. A loop trail winds through a beautiful setting along Limahuli Stream, with some photogenic ocean views as backdrops to the flowers. The garden has a collection of extremely rare species, some of which are almost extinct in the wild, the most interesting of which is the celebrated Brighamia, the bizarre “cabbage on a baseball bat.”
