The Powerline Trail runs a slippery swath from Princeville up into the Makaleha Mountains and down again to the Keahua Forestry Arboretum not far from Kapa’a. It’s an old road that does indeed follow a string of power lines, much of it along a ridge that would be scenic if it weren’t so overgrown. There are some spectacular views now and then, though. Since it does run right up over the mountains it is wet most of the time, with deep puddles that inundate the road/trail from one side to the other. The entire trail is 13 miles long and the going is slow. It takes an exhausting long day to do it all, but you don’t have to. This hike gives you just a taste of the trail, at its northern, easier end. This hike covers the first 2 miles and back, but you can go farther if you like.
