The Owl is a granite dome separated from Katahdin by Witherle Ravine. The first part of the hike climbs gently through towering trees. The last mile is very steep with some exposure. The 360-degree view from the summit is spectacular. Katahdin Stream Falls, the highest in Maine, is a short walk from the junction of The Owl Trail and the Hunt Trail. The Owl Trail climbs away from Hunt Trail a mile from the trailhead. At the junction, the tall evergreens stand straight, surrounded by lightly mossed boulders. Katahdin Stream tumbles loudly past and invisible beneath its high banks. The trail climbs in fits and starts to a relatively level shelf. You cross a small stream, then a huge, climbable boulder. The boulder is visible from The Owl’s summit, giving you a fair idea of where you hiked.
