Slaughter Pond is a long, narrow lake fast against the rocky spine that connects Bean Hole and Moose Mountains. To get there, you hike past Draper Pond, cross Slaughter Brook, loop around Deer Pond, and hike through a beautiful, hardwood forest. There’s a small hill at the beginning of the hike; the rest is ?at. This hike is good for seeing wildlife. Slaughter Pond sits up against the crenelated ridge that links Bean Hole Mountain to Moose Mountain. Moose Mountain is one of those whose name was changed in 1999 to remove the word “squaw” from Maine place-names. Some maps refer to it as Moose’s Bosom Mountain, which is closer to the original name. From the Kidney Pond area, this mountain is the rounded hump west of pointy Doubletop Mountain.
