Dwelley Pond is a marsh-fringed pond among rounded, forestcovered mountains. It’s a good place to see moose and enjoy some North Woods solitude. The hike follows the old McCarty Road, passing the remaining open ?elds at the site of the old logging camp. The entire hike offers good wildlife-viewing opportunities. Northwest Baxter State Park is an area of remote valleys and low, wooded mountains. Along the South Branch of Trout Brook, in the Nineteenth Century, was a logging depot and a farm called McCarty. The Dwelley Pond Trail follows an old roadbed to the McCarty site. Two sets of benches are along the trail for hikers to sit and watch the open fields. Butterflies and birds go about their business.
