The Five Ponds Trail loops around Trout Brook Mountain through a mostly hardwood forest. You pass each pond and cross a long, rocky esker. Two of the ponds have rental canoes you can use if you get a key from the ranger’s station at Trout Brook Farm. The ponds rest in a steep sided valley between rocky mountains. The Five Ponds Trail circumnavigates Trout Brook Mountain through a mostly hardwood forest. The first pond, Littlefield, is shallow and swampy. Young evergreens, like perfect Christmas trees, gather behind its boggy fringe. Next, you pass Billfish Pond, nestled in a shallow valley between Billfish and Horse Mountains. It’s named for William Fish, an early lumberman, and not reflective of the quality of fishing in the pond. It’s the largest of the five ponds.
