Whenever one thinks of multiday tours in Northern California, the route that comes to mind ?rst is the north–south journey from Oregon to San Francisco, on or near the coast. In broadest outline, this means a run down Highways 101 and 1, but it’s rarely that simple.
At times, Hwy 101 becomes a de facto freeway, and bypassing it requires creative navigation. The route leaves Hwy 1 occasionally as well, not to avoid tra?c, but for the fun of exploring smaller roads nearby. Each diversion improves the quality of the experience but adds to the complexity of the route.
