This is a challenging ride, although the two shorter options are quite manageable. The middle third of the big loop is out in the low, open grasslands where the Sierra foothills taper down to the Central Valley. But the other two-thirds scramble up and down over some serious hills, farther up into the mountains. The ride starts and ends in Coulterville, a pioneer town. It had a population of 5000 at the height of the Gold Rush but is now just a sleepy wide spot in the road with an interesting collection of old buildings.
