This hilly loop in the heart of the Gold Country is a hard ride, but also a wonderful one, if you have the fitness to tackle it. There is a shorter option that cuts the challenge down to size a bit. Because the short option diverges right at the start, let's look at it first. Rather than heading north into the town of Jackson, as the long loop does, the short loop heads south on Highway 49 to a right on Middle Bar Road. Both Middle Bar and Gwin Mine are primitive, rather decrepit roads, barely a lane wide, very remote and lightly traveled...and beautiful. Up on the ridge, with lovely views over the surrounding hills and valleys, sits the little village of Paloma.
