This is a classic California foothills ride, out at the western edge of the rolling hills tumbling down from the Sierra. Any farther west, and you’d be in the sprawling Central Valley; any farther east, and the hills would become mountains. It stages out of the town of Plymouth. Founded in 1871, it’s not one of the most interesting of the Gold Country towns, although it does have some charm. But it’s attractive for cyclists because of the many good biking roads in the nearby hills.
