Southwest of the city of Sacramento and northeast of San Francisco Bay lies the Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta. It is the bathtub drain for all of California’s enormous Central Valley. The Sacramento River and all of its tributary streams flow into the delta from the north, while from the south and east, all the rivers draining the Sierra come together in the San Joaquin and join the Sacramento in a vast, flat sprawl of channels and streams and sloughs meandering among myriad islands and marshes. It is the only substantial river delta in California, and its particular landscape makes for an entirely unique cycling experience.
