Much of the fascination of the Devil’s Punchbowl area lies in its trailless canyons, where the erosive forces of water have carved deep furrows in the soft sandstone. This beautiful loop trip, off-trail and requiring navigational skills almost the whole way, includes alder-shaded Holcomb Canyon as well as the large tributary of Punchbowl Canyon overlooked by the Devil's Chair. A nice mountain-desert mix of vegetation pervades the area: alder, willow and sycamore along the creek banks; live-oak, incense cedar and mountain mahogany higher on the banks; pinyon pine dotting the dry slopes.
