In the lower reaches of Devils Canyon, a vociferous little stream darts over an obstacle course of rounded boulders perpetually shaded by thickets of alder and sycamore. Now and again the water slackens in transparent pools of Zen-like simplicity, cupped in naked granite. Skittish trout lurk in the watery depths, while great blue herons stalk the shallows. Hawks wheel through the sky overhead, ever-watchful of the movements of small, furry creatures below. This is quintessential wilderness—remote, pristine, and in this case devilishly difficult to reach.
