One of the most scenic sections of the Backbone Trail cuts across the northwest flank of Saddle Peak, accomplishing in 3.5 indirect miles what a bird in flight could traverse in about 1.5 miles.
Along its winding, scenic course, the trail passes massive sandstone boulders, slices through tangled thickets of chaparral, penetrates secret copses of live oak and bay laurel, and dips to cross a clear-flowing brook in what is appropriately called Dark Canyon.
