Two centuries ago the treeless bump called Mission Point overlooked an arid valley dotted with Indian villages. One century ago, the same vantage point would have revealed an early housing boom amid the citrus groves on the valley floor. Today (whenever the smog chances to clear away) the 150-degree view of the San Fernando Valley takes in a seemingly endless grid of rectilinear streets and avenues, plus all the visible infrastructure of a city-within-a-city of more than 1.5 million people.
